After enjoying some success in India, Yahoo’s “Glue Pages” are coming to the U.S.
Yahoo Glue Beta is essentially a pag of structured search results, pulling content on particular topics from a variety of different sources, including news sources, Wikipedia, image search, Yahoo Answers, blogs and video.
There are also paid search ads on the page (hint hint!). The sources change with the particular topic and not all topics are available, although the Yahoo Search Blog says more will be added eventually.
“We’re starting with a limited set of topics (more will be added over time), pulling together content from the best places on the Web onto one Yahoo! Glue™ page. These pages are built using an algorithm that automatically places the most relevant modules on a page, giving you a visually rich, diverse page all about the topic in which you’re interested.”
Here is an example of what a “Glue” search would look like for Hugh Jackman…

No word when there will be a page on Hugh Jass (sorry, I’m a huge “Simpsons” fan).
Yahoo says it is not their intention to replace the Yahoo Search experience in the U.S. with Glue Pages. They’re simply challenging themselves to explore innovative new ways to “deliver great experiences”.
Well, just about anything will be better than the experience I am currently enjoying with their stock price (eek!).

Chris
Yahoo keeps trying to do something new and different when really they need to just become better than Google at one thing if they want to get real market share for search advertising dollars. If Yahoo spent half the time on Yahoo! SM that they spent on developing new things that will be introduced with fanfare and then die off quietly in six months perhaps they could actually beat Google. It’s the only way their stock price will improve, improved revenue and taking some of the ad spend away from Google. If you have ever used the Yahoo! SM interface…it’s clunky to say the least, and way too many features that Google makes it easy to use are so well hidden away in Yahoo that you need to call them just to find it.
This just looks like another attempt to get more search share, when if they just improved Yahoo! Search Marketing they could leverage their current share much better. I would spend a lot more of my clients’ budgets on Yahoo if it didn’t take 2-3 times the amount of time to do anything in the account. It’s all about ROI, and Yahoo does not seem to have their eye on the prize.
